Q: I’m thinking about moving to the City of Detroit. I live in Virginia, but I grew up in Ferndale. I’ve been thinking about coming back since the city has been an ever-present force in my life despite my having never lived there before. I’m looking for a younger and artsy neighborhood inside Detroit with a low cost of living, agricultural potential, and the chance to do something unique in a growing community. Can you recommend any interesting neighborhoods?

I would suggest Midtown for artsy. There are some great places to stay in Indian Village or West Village, historic with great charm. Also, Woodbridge or Corktown both have very different feels to them.

  2. Calvin

Definitely Midtown. Anywhere around WSU is gonna have an artsy feel to it, and you can find places around there with reasonable rent. There used to be an arts fest around there every year called the Detroit Festival of Arts, but now it's changed to Midsummer Nights In Midtown. This area also has a green fest every year called Dally In The Alley. And I can't leave this post without mentioning the Trumbull Plex, which is sort of an artist/activist community. Lots of stuff to do around this area.

Take at look at Hamtramck also (which technically isn't Detroit). It's kinda grimey, but I think the area has great potential and it's the home of Detroit Threads, a record/clothing store that my friends rave about. I haven't been, but I guess I should pay em a visit soon.

I would say downtown is the best area in the city to reside. Rents are reasonable, its safe, and its at the center of what's going on in the city.

Rent downtown is a bit pricey, IMHO. At least for me it was. Woodbridge has a young community, lotta WSU and former WSU students. And one of my own roommates is an artist, so ya, plenty 'round here. There's a community garden right across from the Woodbridge Pub too, but plenty of open space around to do something of your own.

Midtown is probably your best bet. There are community gardens, great access to the arts (including a nice supply store) and the area is surprisingly walkable. There are two full service grocery stores within the district, as well as a produce market, several eateries and Motor City Brew Works, boasting my favorite patio in the D.

Maybe most importantly for the haters who will try to talk you out of moving in, the area is patrolled by Detroit Police AND Wayne State's police. WSU responds very quickly and they remain very visible in the neighborhood.

Woodbridge! We have so many different kinds of people here. I've been living here for 3 years now. The people are great, always something going on. Pretty much right in the middle of it all. (we're also looking for 2 new roommates – shameless plug, sorry :) ) We do a ton of biking, art oriented stuff. the neighborhood is safe. just watched an amazing woodbridge fireworks show from my balcony last night. AMAZing!

I also lived in Hubbard farms – In mexican town – super great place… if you are not into doing community oriented things I suggest you look to live else where. they are great neighbors, always building on the communty. It's all around an amazing place to meet some of the real-est people you'll ever meet.

  7. @Toka248

Ferndale is a great place. But it will not compare to the feeling I get when I walk out to my car and look at skyscrapers right down the street. Sorry, Guest, but I'm here in the D to make it an even better place, if you don't want to be a part of that, stay in the burbs. We're not afraid of some hard work here.

  8. guest

    Don't.
Detroit is such a mess in so many ways that it will be decades before it is worthy of inhabitance.
Move back to Ferndale (it just won one of five Great American Main Street Awards from the National Trust for Historic Preservation &lt http://www.theoaklandpress.com/articles/2010/05/05/news/local_news/doc4be1c35e53e18611642039.txt or if you must live 'in' the city, move to Hamtramck

  9. @PeopleOfDetroit

Detroit certainly has its problems, Guest, but it also has plenty of people who live, work, and play in the city and enjoy the experience.

  10. Sean M. Gray

Guest, step forward from anonymity that I might compare your neighborhood to my own. I live in the critically acclaimed but–based on your assertion–woefully uninhabitable Lafayette Park neighborhood so I would love to see how those in the know live.

  11. Aric Miller

I live in Woodbridge and love it. The architecture is amazing (including Victorian styles) and there is a strong community feel. We just had our own fireworks display that was pretty impressive. I am always bumping into friends on the street, and everyone is always out on the beautiful and abundant porches. There are many private gardens, but not a community garden so you have to start one! It is defiantly an "artsy" neighborhood, as there are numerous artists and musicians here. There is also a "college" feel toward the northern part of the neighborhood because its next to WSU. There is also three DIY/all-ages venues – Trumbullplex, The Grey Shack and the CAID. And the WoodbridgePub is a good place to hang out and run into people, and they have a weekly and monthly DJ nights. There is also a supermarket, University Foods, close by, as well as a Chinese place, subway and blockbuster. A problem I have found though is the lack of walkability. Besides the places I mentioned and several liquor stores and gas stations, there aren't really any businesses open.

Midtown is going to be the place where a walkable urban lifestyle is more possible. There are numerous bars and restaurants and there is starting to be more and more shops. Midtown is also home to Wayne State University and Detroit Medical Center. There is also a planned Light-Rail line on Woodward Ave. And the Midtown Loop Greeway is under construction, which run along Cass, Canfieldn, John R and Kirby and then eventually connect to the Dequinder Cut greeway and the Riverfront. Midtown is also where all the Museums are, and also College for Creative Studies main campus. The housing stock is mostly apartments, so don't expect a yard. The good thing though is that most apartments include heat because it is in the "steam district."

I would also recommend looking into Corktown and Eastern Market. Corktown has a very victorian, small town feel, and has a lot of bars and a few good restaurants, and is only blocks from Downtown. Eastern Market has a very urban feel, made up of mostly warehouses and commercial buildings, many of them converted to lofts. There is also the public market day on saturday which draws tens of thousands each week. And the area is dotted with restaurants, food stores and shops. Plus its only half a mile outside of Downtown.

Downtown is awesome… always something to do, but way too overpriced for the most part and there isn't even a grocery store.

Midtown all the way. By far the best, safest, most artsy, and most up and coming area in the D.

  13. jon

north corktown baby. you might suspect, you won't understand why it's the best neighborhood in the city till you visit for a few days.
