What he loves about Detroit:
Detroit feels like America’s biggest small town. There is a great sense of community as a result of a shared commitment to, and love for, Detroit. The people that are here all want to be here.

Why he chooses to stay:
Every time I hear of another friend bailing on Detroit in search of more success or more excitement, I cant help but to think of the millions of other recent grads heading to the same cities in search of the same success. Competing for the same internships, hunting for the same overpriced studio apartments, and struggling to rebuild a new social network of friends and mentors. Detroit, on the other hand, is the kind of city where driven people with good ideas can hit the ground running.

Favorite Spots:

  1. Cliff Bells
  2. Belle Isle
  3. Polish Village Cafe
  4. Bureau of Urban Living
  5. Le Petit Zinc
  6. John King Books
  7. Eastern Market
  8. The new Riverfront
  9. Woodbridge Pub

Chris’ Style:

Clean, classic and crisp. After years of trial and error I’ve learned the importance of editing out everything  unnecessary and filling my home with beautiful objects that I enjoy.  I don’t limit myself to one specific look or style (Mid century, modern, etc.). Instead I look for items from every period which are beautiful, useful, and most importantly, well constructed using quality materials.  I’m very much inspired by Martha Stewart and her ability to blend the classic with the contemporary.

I love the idea of “keeping house”. I’ve spent years trying to create a comfortable and beautiful home in which my friends, family, partner and I can enjoy living in. One of life’s greatest pleasures are crisp ironed bed sheets. My two favorite possessions are my old “Iron Rite” rotary Iron and my Miele vacuum.

Furniture & Accessory Sources:

  • Leather Couch, Hudson’s
  • Coffee table and side table, Bright Idea’s (Royal Oak)
  • “Taccia Lamp” on side table, Designed in 1962 by Achille Castiglioni, Arkitektura (Birmingham)
  • White picture frame on side table, Johnathan Adler store (Chicago)
  • Dining Table, Crate and Barrel (Somerset Collection)
  • Dining Chairs, “Kyoto Chair”, Design Within Reach (Birmingham)
  • Art in Dining room, Tyree Guyton (The Heidelberg Project)
  • Bedroom Lamps, The Home Depot (Detroit)
  • Bedroom Furniture, Bright Idea’s (Royal Oak)
  • Other odds and ends were found on Craigslist or at various estate sales
