Hajj Flemings, Founder of Brand Camp University & Personal Branding Strategist
High School: Roseville High School
College: Michigan Technological University (Mechanical Engineering) & Lawrence Technological University (MBA)
How he’s making his mark on the city of Detroit:
“Detroit was the Silicon Valley of its day with the automotive industry and Motown. One of my goals is to help the City of Detroit return to prominence in the interactive space. Creating events like Brand Camp and having metro Detroit as its hub I look to bring thought leaders to our region to develop creative capital that can be monetized.
I am making an impact on the city with the development of Brand Camp, a personal branding conference that I birthed in Metro Detroit. The focus of the conference is to educate corporations, organization, entrepreneurs and students on using the real-time for career and economic growth.
We are working to help people package themselves better, create better career opportunities for themselves and enable them to start new businesses in the city”.
On how he accomplished his goals:
“My first Brand Camp conference was financed out of my own pocket. I believed in the mission enough to say that I was willing to invest in my dream. I also found that when people saw that I was fully committed they were willing to support my ideas”.
On why he chooses to stay in Detroit:
“I decided to stay in Metro Detroit because I saw opportunity. The best time to invest in any market is when things are ‘low’. It is evident that Detroit is primed for a comeback, if not then the city wouldn’t be the focus of mainstream media economically”.
On his favorite things about Detroit:
“My favorite thing about the city is the Fox Theatre which was built in the 20’s it has great historical value for the city and is a great location to attend an event”.
On what he wishes you knew about Detroit:
“That the city has a lot of entrepreneurial vigor. There are many great Detroit stories that exist: Faygo, Venors, Motown, Detroit Red Wings (part of the original 6-NHL hockey teams) and the list goes on. Some of the greatest entrepreneurial stories are right in our own backyard”.
On future plans:
“My future plans are to expand Brand Camp University which produces the Brand Camp conference. Ultimately I want to help the people and corporations in this region utilize social technology to bring economic growth to the city”.
Hajj’s words of wisdom: “The barriers of entry are lower in Detroit then they are in any other major market like Chicago, New York, or Los Angeles. So my advice is to do something that matters; do work that makes people want to talk about, and what better place then in Detroit”.
