"Not to sound too metaphysical, but I think the city is making more of an impact on me than I am on it. I really came out here to be able to investigate a more authentic idea of who I am."

"I don't see our current situation as a problem, I see it as a world of opportunity. An opportunity for each and every one of us to make a difference."

Surab Deb, 10-year Disc Jockey Vet

Age: 29

High School: Rochester High

Hood: Clawson

How he’s making his mark on the city of Detroit:

I’m a local DJ and I primarily spin in Detroit and in neighboring areas in Southeast, Michigan. I provide an experience where people can come and enjoy music of different genres.  I love to spin Hip-Hop, House, and of course Reggae!

On how he accomplished his goals:

I have always loved music and so DJ’ing came naturally.  As I got into the scene, I began networking and meeting everyone I could.  I consider myself a very easy going person and treat people the way I want to be treated, and believe this is what has helped me make the connections that I’ve made.  I feel that you can learn something from everyone, so I spend as much time as I can learning from the people I meet in the industry and growing from there.  I have been doing this for over 10 years and haven’t looked back.  My favorite event was when I brought down Nina Sky to perform.  It was my first big event and a tremendous learning experience!

DJ’s who inspire Surab:

Bruce Cobb, DJ Whip, DJ Tom T,  & DJ Godfather and I admire their work because when you are around them, you can’t help but be inspired.  I have had the honor of being next to them during performances and they truly are entertainers.

On why he chooses to stay in Detroit:

Detroit has inspiration in the air and that is what keeps me here.  Just being around here makes me want to work harder, smarter, and stronger.

On his favorite things about Detroit:

I love the diversity of the city.  There are so many different cultures that you can experience and not have to leave the city! I love going to all the different restaurants in Detroit.  One minute you can have Cuban and the next Thai.  I love places like Oslo and Vincente’s in Detroit. Venue’s are constantly evolving and becoming better.  I would say I love playing at Monarch Nightclub in downtown Detroit because the layout works perfectly with me and the crowd.

On what he wishes you knew about Detroit:

I wish people knew how passionate and driven we are. Detroiters won’t take failure as an option.  We wont allow stigmas and negative publicity hold us back.  If anything I think we do a great job of being “spin doctors” by turning the negative into a positive. Each and every person has this quality and it’s up to us to showcase all the talent that Detroit has to offer.

On future plans:

My future plans are to stay involved with arts and culture and hopefully continue to provide quality entertainment for years to come. I want to continue to grow and develop relationships in music and life, so that I am in a better position to help others around me.  I’m always looking for mentors to help me grow, I feel that mentor-ship play a crucial role in one’s development.

Surab’s words of wisdom:

Don’t give up on their dreams, keep trying and don’t let obstacles interfere with what your passion is.
