"Not to sound too metaphysical, but I think the city is making more of an impact on me than I am on it. I really came out here to be able to investigate a more authentic idea of who I am."

Emily Doerr, Founder of Hostel Detroit

Age: 26

High School: Goodrich High School

College: Central Michigan University / University of Detroit-Mercy

Hood: North Corktown – Detroit

How she’s making her mark on the city of Detroit:

I’m the founder of Hostel Detroit, a nonprofit organization aimed toward opening a hostel in North Corktown in April 2011. We are a 100% volunteer-driven and funded cause in terms of start-up; we’ll hire staff once we open. We’re excited to be an access point for visitors of all ages and interests to Southeast Michigan, making the city and all of its assets more accessible!

On how she accomplished her goals:

Using facebook and word-of-mouth, plus Ashley C. Woods as our PR guru, we quickly started spreading the word through the city of Detroit, then to Southeast Michigan at-large through Model D, Crains Detroit Business, WDET / Michigan Public Radio, and Detroit Free Press. This led to donations of furniture, monetary support, and volunteers. It has been an incredible experience to meet so many new people with a similar goal!

On why she chooses to stay in Detroit:

Right now is the time in my life to make change, to build, to be actively pursuing the impossible and make it happen. Detroit is a city that needs that energy right now.

On her favorite things about Detroit:

- D’Mongos Speakeasy
- Cadieux Cafe
- Belle Isle
- Bakers Keyboard Lounge
- bikeriding all summer
- running on the riverwalk
- my boyfriend Julius Marchwicki

On what she wishes you knew about Detroit:

Come to Hostel Detroit and we’ll educate you!

On future plans:

Finish up my MBA at University of Detroit-Mercy and I’d like to explore increasing the calendar of the Michigan Shakespeare Festival and getting theatres in Detroit more involved.

Emily’s words of wisdom:

Make friends with licensed builders, electricians, and friends who will help brainstorm with you to make your ideas better! Also, do favors and be friendly to everyone right now, and that way, when you ask them for help, they don’t think you are fake. People love helping genuine people – but they can spot a fake in a second!
